Eagles Win Two Of Three On Day 2 Of Region II Duals

The Ashland University wrestling team took two out of three duals on the second day of the Region II Duals in Hartsville, S.C. on Saturday (Jan. 30).

The Eagles defeated King University, 29-14, and UNC-Pembroke, 30-13. Ashland narrowly fell to Limestone College, 18-15.

Eagle senior Joe Brandt (197 pounds) swept all three of his matches on Saturday, pushing his season record to 18-2. Brandt, the No. 3 wrestler in the country at 197, capped off his three rounds with an 18-5 major decision over Faris Teia of UNC-Pembroke. Brandt is riding an 11-match win streak that dates back to Nov. 21 at the Findlay open.

Freshman Christian Price ran the table at 165, defeating all three of his opponents. Price defeated Micael Mota of Limestone (8-4 decision), Darius Rutland of King University (fall in 2:08) and Joe Remaklus from UNC-Pembroke (inj. 4:44).

At 133, freshman Chandler Minnard recorded two victories on the afternoon. Minnard, ranked No. 1 in Super Region II, won both by tech fall - 21-0 over Frank Lopez of King University and 17-1 over Dustin Smith of UNC-Pembroke.

Redshirt junior Brent Fickel picked up two victories at 149. Fickel, ranked No. 6 in Super Region II, took down UNC-Pembroke's Eric Milks by 9-5 decision. Fickel won the other match by forfeit.

The Eagles will now turn their attention to the Roughnecks and wrestle at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Findlay on Wednesday (Feb. 3). The match will begin at 7 p.m.
