Weirich, Fenner III Place To Start 2017-18 At Michigan State Open

Ashland University's wrestling team began the 2017-18 season on Sunday (Nov. 5) at the Michigan State Open.

Two Eagles finished the day as placers in their respective brackets. Redshirt freshman Tristen Weirich was fourth at 285 pounds in the freshman/sophomore tournament, ending at 4-2 and losing the third-place match due to medical forfeit, while sophomore Jerry Fenner III took sixth at 133 pounds in the open division and went 3-3. Fenner also took a medical forfeit to finish the day.

Also competing for Ashland in the open bracket were junior Danny Morell at 133 pounds (2-2), sophomore Bret Romanzak at 165 (4-2) and sophomore Christian Price at 174 (1-2).

In the freshman/sophomore division, Eagles seeing action were freshman Gage Griffith at 125 (2-2), redshirt freshman Alex Gordy at 133 (0-2), freshman Justin Wilcox at 133 (0-2), redshirt freshman Dustin Marteney at 149 (2-2), freshman Cameron Jenkins at 157 (0-2), freshman Chance Esmont at 165 (2-2), freshman Trevyon Terry at 174 (1-2) and freshman Noah Jakubas at 174 (1-2).

Ashland will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for its second outing of the young season, the Ohio Intercollegiates on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.
