Six Ashland University wrestlers competed on Sunday (Feb. 11) at the John Carroll University Open, led by a first-place effort from freshman Sid Ohl.
In one of two 157-pound brackets, Ohl went 3-0 by taking decisions of 4-2, 7-2 and 6-1. The latter of those wins came in the first-place match against Kevin Kelly of Baldwin Wallace.
Two Eagles – sophomore Garrett Hall and junior Trae Coopwood – finished third in their respective brackets. In one 157-pound bracket, Hall finished 3-1, winning 2-0 and 10-7 decisions and taking the third-place match due to disqualification. At 141 pounds, Coopwood took 6-5 and 2-1 decisions before taking third due to medical forfeit.
At 174 pounds, freshman Chance Esmont finished in fourth place, going 2-2 with two wins by decision (9-4 and 10-3).
Freshman Carson Speelman was 1-1 and medically forfeited at 149 pounds, while freshman Cameron Jenkins went 0-2 at 157 pounds.
The No. 4-ranked Eagles will begin the postseason with Day 1 of the NCAA Super Region II on Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. in Findlay, Ohio.
