Romanzak Ranked First In Nation, Eagles 13th In Preseason Poll

Ashland University's wrestling team is ranked 13th in the nation in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 preseason poll.

In 2017-18, the Eagles placed fifth at nationals, the team's best finish since placing fourth in 2002.

Redshirt junior Bret Romanzak was named the preseason No. 1 wrestler at 165 pounds. Romanzak ended the 2017-18 season as the national champion in the 165 class, going 39-3 in the process. He was the first Ashland underclassman to win a national title since Corey Kline won as a freshman in 1996.

Two other Ashland grapplers were named to the top 10 of their weight class. Redshirt junior Chandler Minnard came in at ninth at 141. He did not wrestle during the 2017-18 season, but competed at nationals in 2016-17.

Redshirt junior Christian Price also was picked near the top of his class. Price was picked 10th in the 174 class. He was 25-11 during the 2017-18 season and competed at nationals.

Ashland will host the NCAA Division II wrestling nationals in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 8-9.

The Eagles' season begins on Friday (Nov. 2) at the Kent State Duals at 1 p.m.
