Eagle Grapplers Perform Well At Ohio Intercollegiates

Ashland University's wrestling team competed at the 2018 Ohio Intercollegiates on Sunday (Nov. 11), with numerous Eagle wrestlers seeing great success, placing in the top five of their respective divisions.

In the gold division, redshirt junior Bret Romanzak had the Eagles' best showing, placing third in the 165-pound class. In the first round, Romanzak won by decision over Notre Dame's Zach Kelly (4-0). He continued rolling in the second round with a win over Davenport's Caleb Norris (8-1). In the quarterfinal, Romanzak bested Nathan Atienza of Michigan State by a score of 10-2.

After losing to Ohio State's Fritz Schierl in the semifinal (4-3), Romanzak won his third-place match by injury default.

Redshirt sophomore Tristen Weirich had Ashland's second-best showing in the gold division, placing fourth at 285. Weirich cruised through Round 1, winning 19-4 by tech fall over Davenport's Raiden Macleod. Weirich was beaten in the quarterfinal by Ohio State's Chase Singletary. He then won the next three matchups in the consolation bracket – falls over Chase Carter of Tiffin and Spencer Berthold of Kent State, and a 2-1 decision over Ohio State's Gary Traub.

Also in the gold division, redshirt junior Christian Price earned a fifth-place finish in the 174-pound class by winning the fifth-place match 12-6 by decision over Clarion's Max Wohlabaugh.

Ashland had plenty of success in the white division, as well.

Sophomore Carson Speelman won the 149-pound class. In the semifinal, Speelman won by decision over Mercyhurst's Mike Clark (9-6). Speelman won the first-place match by fall over Notre Dame's Sandro Ramirez.

Freshman Luke Wymer earned a second-place finish in the 133-pound class. Wymer won his quarterfinal match by tech fall (15-0) over Urbana's B ryce Davis, and his semifinal match by fall over Case Western's Jacob Frisch before falling the first-place match.

Redshirt freshman Bryce Davis won his third-place match in the 125-pound class by medical forfeit. Prior to that match, he won the quarterfinal of the championship bracket by decision 5-1, over Notre Dame's Robert Campos.

Ashland will compete next on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Findlay Open, beginning at 9 a.m.
