Eagle Grapplers Go 2-1 At Greyhound Duals

Ashland University's wrestling team went 2-1 at the Greyhound Duals on Saturday (Jan. 19), beating Davenport (41-0) and Maryville (27-7).

The No. 17 Eagles' only loss came to No. 12 Indianapolis.

Ashland's grapplers dominated Davenport, winning all 10 matchups.

Senior Danny Morell won by forfeit at 125 pounds, freshman Luke Wymer won by tech fall at 133 pounds, redshirt junior Trae Coopwood got the result at 141 pounds, a 7-2 decision; sophomore Cameron Jenkins earned a win in a tight dual at 149 pounds, an 8-7 decision; and sophomore Cody Woods won by fall at 157.

Redshirt junior Bret Romanzak won 4-1 at 165, redshirt junior Christian Price topped his opponent at 174 by major decision, freshman Daniel Beemer won by tech fall at 184, redshirt freshman Peter Abraham got the 8-2 decision at 197, and freshman Jeffrey Ware ended things with a win at 285, a 5-1 decision.

Ashland won eight of 10 against Maryville to earn its second win on the day.

Wymer earned his second win of the day at 133 in a 7-1 decision, redshirt junior Chandler Minnard came out on top of a close dual, a 7-5 decision; sophomore Chance Esmont won at 157 in a 7-2 decision, and Romanzak earned another result at 165, at 4-2 decision.

Price's dual went to one overtime, where he won by sudden victory at 174. Beemer kept things rolling earning the 5-2 decision at 184. To end the day, Abraham won by forfeit at 197, and redshirt sophomore 285-pounder Tristen Weirich won a 5-2 decision.

In the Eagles' only loss on the day, it was Abraham that won the only dual against No. 12 Indianapolis. He won at 197 by 4-3 decision. Abraham was the only Eagle grappler to wrestle in all three duals and go undefeated on the day.

Ashland will come back for a big week of home duals. The Eagles will play host to Urbana on Wednesday (Jan. 23) at 7 p.m. in Kates Gymnasium.
