Eagles Win Final Dual Of The Season

Ashland University's wrestling team capped its regular season of duals on a high note on Friday (Feb. 8), winning 28-13 over No. 21 Lake Erie College.

The No. 19/25 Eagles won six of 10 matches, with wins coming from redshirt junior Chandler Minnard, sophomore Carson Speelman, redshirt junior Bret Romanzak, redshirt junior Christian Price, freshman Daniel Beemer, and redshirt sophomore Tristen Weirich.

Minnard opened up the scoring for Ashland with a fall at 6:14 to win at 141 pounds. Speelman followed that up at 149 pounds with another fall, this time at 1:07.

Romanzak earned a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds. In the next match, it took Price overtime to get the win at 174 pounds. He managed to best Lake Erie's Tyler Orrison, 8-6, making use of the extra time.

Securing the team win for the Eagles were Beemer at 184 and Weirich at 285. Beemer tallied 25 points and earned a tech fall at 7:00. Weirich also scored big for Ashland with an 11-3 major decision.

The Eagles were able to keep scores to a minimum in losses, while simultaneously racking up their points with two falls, two major decisions, a tech fall, and a regular decision.

Ashland will wrestle for the final time before the NCAA Division II Regionals on Sunday (Feb. 10) at the John Carroll Open in Cleveland, Ohio.
