Ashland's Fasnacht Wins John Carroll Open

Ashland University's Eric Fasnacht won the John Carroll Open on Sunday (Feb. 10) at 165 pounds.

Fasnacht, a redshirt sophomore, was dominant at the JCU Open. He won his first match by 16-2 major decision over West Virginia's Tucker Nadeau, wrestling unattached. In the quarterfinal, he won by fall in 42 seconds. Fasnacht kept it up in the semis, rolling to another major-decision win, 11-3, over Notre Dame College's Jack Rogan, wrestling unattached.

In the finals, Fasnacht bested Cleveland State's Georgio Poullas, wrestlng unattached, in a 6-4 decision to take the JCU Open's top podium spot.

Sophomore Cameron Jenkins had a strong showing at 149 pounds, narrowly missing out on the first-place spot. Jenkins got started with a win in his first match by tech fall, 16-0. He won the quarterfinal in a 5-2 decision, and bested Findlay's Jeffery Mullinax 5-1 in the semifinal. In the final, a 1-0 decision went to Baldwin Wallace's Dalton Leightner over Jenkins.

Junior Christian Wellman earned third place for Ashland at 125 pounds. He lost his opener to go into the consolation bracket and never looked back. Wellman won out in his next three matches by fall at 4:26, major decision, and in the third-place match, a 15-1 major decision.

Redshirt junior Trae Coopwood also earned third place for the Eagles, doing so at 141 pounds. Similarly to Wellman, Coopwood dropped the first match he wrestled in before winning out. He won his matches by a 6-5 decision, a medical forfeit, and a 4-3 decision in the third-place match.

Jeffrey Ware, a freshman, fell just short of the consolation finals match. He earned wins by a 4-0 decision, and a fall at 3:47 before he lost a 3-1 decision in the consolation semifinal.

Ashland's regular season has concluded, and the Eagles will compete next at the NCAA Division II Regionals on Feb. 23, starting at 10 a.m.
