Eagles Show Promise At Ohio Intercollegiates

Ashland University's wrestling team had a promising showing at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday (Nov. 10).

Junior heavyweight Tristen Weirich finished second in the gold division. Weirich won his quarterfinal match by decision, 6-3, against Cleveland State's Collin Kelly. Weirich won in the semifinal by another decision, 7-2 over Mercyhurst's Alex Guidice. In the first-place match, Weirich lost by fall to Jacob Robb of Mercyhurst.

Junior Carson Speelman nearly won the gold division 149-pound class. He came up just short in the championship match, losing 6-4 to Cleveland State's Gus Sutton. To get there, Speelman won a 4-3 decision in Round 1, by tech fall over Ohio State's Trey Grenier in the quarterfinal, and a major decision win in the semifinal match.

Bret Romanzak, redshirt senior, finished third at 174 pounds in the gold division. He won his first two rounds by 7-0 and 9-3 decisions, respectively. In the semifinal match, Ohio State's Rocky Jordan bested Romanzak by a 7-1 margin. In the third-place match, Romanzak bounced back to win a 5-2 decision over Cleveland State's Chase Archangelo.

Redshirt senior Chandler Minnard finished in fourth place at 141 pounds in the gold division for Ashland. Minnard had a bye in the first round, so he didn't wrestle until Round 2. He won by tech fall, 16-1, in his first competition of the day. Minnard then went on to beat Cleveland State's Peyton Blasko by 13-10 decision before stumbling in his final two matches of the day.

Aidan Pasiuk, junior, also finished fourth for Ashland in the gold division at 184 pounds. He received a Round 1 bye and won his quarterfinal matchup in a 12-2 major decision over Mercyhurst's Trever Begin. He lost his final two matches of the day due to medical forfeit.

Cameron Jenkins, junior, finished sixth in the gold division at 157 pounds for the Eagles. He won his first-round matchup by 7-2 decision before he fell to the consolation bracket.

In the white division, redshirt freshmen Ben Sherill, Brahm Ginter and Ty Petrey all had success. Sherrill finished fourth in the 149-pound class. He won his first two rounds by fall. Sherrill won in the quarterfinal in a 15-9 decision before stumbling in the semifinal to Notre Dame College's Sandro Ramirez, 7-4.

Ginter lost his first match of the day, but fought back to win an 8-1 decision, a fall over John Carroll's Thomas Blackwell, and another fall over Ohio Wesleyan's Abraham Spurlock to finish fifth at 184 pounds. Petrey finished fourth in the heavyweight class within the white division. He won by fall in Round 1, and by 9-7 decision in the quarterfinal.

Ashland's wrestlers will compete next at the Findlay Open in Findlay, Ohio, on Saturday (Nov. 16) starting at 9 a.m.
