No. 12 Grand Valley State Drops Eagles On Friday

The Ashland University women's soccer team took on No. 12 Grand Valley State on Friday (Sept. 15) evening in Allendale, Mich., and the Lakers came away with the 3-0 win in nonconference action.

The Lakers (3-2), winners of three of the last four NCAA Division II national titles, scored two goals in the first half and added another just after halftime while keeping the Eagles (1-2-1) off the board.

Gabriella Mencotti's goal in the ninth minute gave the Lakers the lead and Cecilia Steinwascher added a second in the 26th minute as the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the intermission. GVSU held a 10-4 edge in shots in the first half. 

Ava Cook scored just 63 seconds into the second half to give the Lakers a 3-0 cushion.

Overall, the Lakers led in shots, 21-7, and corner kicks, 6-0. Freshman Hannah Simard was the only AU player to unleash two shots in the game.

Freshman Abby Lampe made eight saves in the game while fellow rookie Hannah Lee made two stops.

The Eagles will return to the pitch on Sunday (Sept. 17) at noon when they play Ferris State in another non-GLIAC contest.
