Late Goal Lifts Eagles To 1-0 Win in GLIAC Opener

The Ashland University women's soccer team scored a late goal and freshman goalkeeper Abby Lampe made seven saves to keep a clean sheet as the Eagles came away with a 1-0 win at Tiffin in both teams' GLIAC opener on Sunday (Sept. 24) afternoon.

Playing under scorching late summer heat, the teams played a wide open game, combining for 42 shots as TU maintained a 23-19 advantage.

The Eagles (3-3-1, 1-0 GLIAC) finally broke the scoreless tie in the 81st minute as freshman Alexa Jacob got on the end of a corner kick by senior Brittany Ehlert for her first career goal.

Lampe made a pair of saves after the goal to keep the Dragons (1-6-1, 0-1 GLIAC) off the board.

The AU defense did tremendous work on the back line, facing 23 shots, but still keeping the hosts scoreless. The game also featured 18 corner kicks with the Eagles taking 12 of those.

Senior Morgan Bittengle led the Eagles with five shots. TU goalkeeper Samantha Ortenzi made nine shots.

The Eagles will play their third game in five days on Tuesday (Sept. 26) when they return to Ferguson Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Notre Dame (Ohio).
