The Ashland University women's soccer team put on a dominant display in front of a large crowd on Saturday (Sept. 1) afternoon, defeating Tiffin, 2-1, at Ferguson Field.
The Eagles (1-0-1) held a 22-2 edge in shots in the game and controlled the pace and possession for much of the afternoon.
It was the first head coaching win in the career of Taylor Clarke, who became the program's interim head coach in the summer.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the seventh minute as freshman Mary Grace Haney played in a corner kick that was partially cleared. She regained possession and sent in another cross that senior Sydney Wright headed home for a 1-0 lead.
It looked like only a matter of time before Ashland would have another goal, but the Dragons (0-2) were able to equalize in the 19th minute against run of play. Carla Briscoe disrupted AU's possession, got behind the back line and scored from 12 yards out.
Four minutes before halftime, the Eagles regained the lead. Freshman Tori Baker picked out fellow rookie Faith Lewis on a ball over the top. Lewis, who made a perfectly-timed run, slotted in the goal on the breakaway.
The Eagles posted 11 shots in each of the two halves and held the Dragons off the board in the second half to preserve the 2-1 scoreline.
Tiffin's Shelby Haworth made 10 saves in the game while sophomore keeper Hannah Lee did not have any saves.
The Eagles will return to Ferguson Field on Wednesday (Sept. 5) when they take on Notre Dame College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
