Goal-Scoring Run Continues With 5-0 Win Over Davenport

The Ashland University women's soccer team displayed for the second straight game its ability to score goals in bunches as the Eagles dispatched Davenport, 5-0, on Friday (Sept. 14) night at Ferguson Field.

Ashland (5-0-1) ran its winning streak to five and season-opening unbeaten streak to six.

The Eagles scored right before halftime, then added three more in the first seven-plus minutes after halftime to turn a tight game into a rout. In a 4-1 win over Charleston on Wednesday, AU scored three times in the span of 80 seconds.

The Eagles' dominance was evident in the scoreline as AU got on the board in the 19th minute via a free kick. Freshman Mary Grace Haney lined up near the home bench and sent in a lofted ball that redshirt-junior Deijah Swihart deflected with a header at the back post.

The hosts were in total command of the game in the first half and doubled their lead in the 45th minute as freshman Faith Lewis nipped the ball off Davenport's keeper and slid it into the goal for her third goal of the season.

Ashland added to its 2-0 lead three minutes after half time. Junior Korinna Lakes made a run that took her to the end line where she passed back for sophomore Hannah Simard, who finished easily past the DU keeper.

Two minutes later it was Simard who set up Swihart as the latter ripped a shot from a tight angle on the left side for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season.

Ashland's final tally came 76 seconds later when junior Emily Ledbetter tore down the right side and found Simard, who chipped a shot over Davenport keeper Macie DeWyse and into the back of the net for her third goal of the second and second of the night.

The Eagles got a tremendous performance in goal from sophomore keeper Hannah Lee, who made a season-high six saves to keep her third clean sheet in the last four games. She made five saves in the second half, including one that she deflected over the bar and another that she snared with a dive to her right.

AU held a 13-7 edge in total shots.

The Eagles have a test coming on Sunday (Sept. 16) as No. 3 Grand Valley State pays a visit to Ferguson Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
