Wright Takes GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Ashland University redshirt-junior center back Sydney Wright was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday (Sept. 24) afternoon.

This is the third straight week the No. 22-ranked Eagles have claimed the GLIAC defensive weekly honors after sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Lee won the honors the last two weeks.

Wright anchored a defense that allowed just eight shots in two games last week, including none in a 5-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday. The Eagles have recorded four straight shutouts and have not allowed a goal in the last 399 minutes. It is AU's longest shutout streak since 2004.

Wright helped Ashland hold Parkside to eight shots in a 1-0 win on Friday with most of them coming from outside the 18-yard box. Wright also assisted on junior Emily Ledbetter's goal in Ashland's win on Sunday.

Ashland has allowed just three goals this season and the Eagles have a 0.32 goals against average with Wright having started every game at center back. She was an all-region selection last season.

The Eagles (7-0-2, 2-0 GLIAC) have started the season with a nine-game unbeaten run, their longest to start a season since 2015.

Ashland will hit the road for its next five games beginning Friday (Sept. 28) at 4 p.m. at No. 17 Ferris State.
