In less than two hours, Ashland University's women's soccer team went from fifth place to third place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings – and needed just 90 minutes to do it.
After playing three consecutive double-overtime games, the Eagle women earned a 2-0 regulation victory on Friday (Oct. 12) night at Davenport. Ashland moves into the No. 3 spot in the league table at 8-1-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the conference, while the Panthers are 5-6, 3-2.
"It was a fantastic group effort," said Ashland interim head coach Taylor Clarke. "It's one that we definitely had to grind out. I thought we really came out and stepped up our game in the second half.
"We finished our chances in the first half. In the second half, we felt like we dominated play."
Both of the Eagles' tallies came in the first half. In the 16th minute, freshman forward/midfielder Makenzie Kelly scored her fourth goal of the season on a feed from junior midfielder Korinna Lakes. It was Lakes' third assist of 2018.
Then, in the 35th minute, junior forward Emily Ledbetter took a cross from junior midfielder Juliana Markovic for the final margin of victory. Ledbetter's goal was her third, Markovic's helper her first of the campaign.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Lee picked up her sixth win and her fourth clean sheet of the season, making five saves and dropping her season goals-against average to 0.69.
Ashland's final 2018 regular-season road game will be Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1 p.m. at No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State (13-0-1, 5-0).
