The Ashland University women's soccer team was not able to get on the board as No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State turned away the Eagles, 3-0, on Sunday (Oct. 14) afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field in Allendale, Mich.
The Lakers (14-0-1, 6-0 GLIAC) scored in the third minute as a cross by Ava Cook was deflected into the goal off an AU defender, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Grand Valley State's lead doubled in the 21st minute on a high-arcing shot from the corner of the penalty area by Caitie Baron.
The Eagles (8-2-4, 3-1-2 GLIAC), who dropped their first game in GLIAC play this season, had a few chances against the Lakers, taking seven shots in the game, including two on target. Jessica Radice and Kristy Gomez combined two saves and a shutout.
In the 84th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Lee saved Tara Lierman's penalty kick, but the latter was able to score on the rebound.
Sophomore Hannah Simard led the Eagles with three shots in the game.
The Eagles tied the Lakers earlier this season, 0-0, at Ferguson Field in a nonconference game.
Ashland will finish the regular season with three games at its home field, beginning Friday (Oct. 19) at 5 p.m. against Northern Michigan.
