The Ashland University women's soccer team played Saginaw Valley State to a scoreless draw on Friday (Oct. 26) evening in the regular season finale at Ferguson Field.
With the 0-0 tie, the Eagles (9-3-5, 4-2-3 GLIAC) fell to the No. 5 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will travel to No. 4-seed Michigan Tech for the quarterfinal round on Tuesday (Oct. 30). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
On Friday, the Eagles were not able to get their attack going in the first half as the Cardinals (11-3-3, 5-2-2 GLIAC) controlled play and held a 9-0 edge in shots going into halftime.
The Eagles remained organized defensively and sophomore keeper Abby Lampe made six saves in the first 45 minutes.
The game turned in Ashland's favor in the second half. The Eagles mounted opportunities and maintained possession in the SVSU half for long stretches, but were unable to nab a goal.
The Eagles led in shots, 5-1 in the second half before a flurry of activity in the overtime periods nearly led to goals by both teams. Alyssa Watts made two tremendous saves for the Cardinals in overtime and redshirt-junior Sydney Wright got in front of a shot to keep SVSU off the board in the second OT period.
It was a credit to the AU possession and defense that Saginaw Valley did not have a shot on goal in the second half or overtime periods.
Ashland had a 10-2 edge in corner kicks and SVSU led 12-10 overall in shots.
Lampe kept her clean record on the season, having not allowed a goal in 327 minutes, while Watts made seven saves to keep her clean sheet.
