ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Ashland University women's soccer team was eliminated from the GLIAC Tournament as No. 1 Grand Valley State advanced to the championship game with a 3-0 win on Friday (Nov. 2) evening at the GVSU Soccer Field.
The Eagles (10-4-5), seeded No. 5 in the GLIAC Tournament, will now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The field will be announced on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Ashland is looking to qualify for its first NCAA Tournament since 2004.
On Friday, the Eagles were not able to get on the board, despite working into the GVSU penalty area a few times throughout the night.
The Lakers (19-0-1) scored in the 19th minute as Ava Cook headed in a ball that just sneaked over the goal line at the back post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Madeline Becker's goal in the 27th minute made it 2-0 and Cook's second goal pushed the GVSU lead to 3-0 in the second half.
Grand Valley State led in shots, 15-2, and corner kicks, 5-0.
Sophomore keeper Abby Lampe made four saves for Ashalnd while GVSU keeper Jessica Radice was called into action one time.
Ashland, which entered the week ranked No. 7 in the Midwest Region, will learn of its NCAA Tournament fate on the NCAA Selection Show at 6:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5). The Eagles advanced to the GLIAC Tournament semifinal after pulling out a 1-0 road win at Michigan Tech on Tuesday.
