The Ashland University women's soccer team scored an early goal, but Trevecca Nazarene equalized just three minutes from full-time as the teams ended Thursday's (Sept. 19) match in a 1-1 stalemate at Ferguson Field.
The Eagles (3-1-1) dominated possession throughout the afternoon and looked like they would be able to see out a 1-0 win.
The Trojans (0-3-2) scored a goal in the 87th minute against the run of play as Danyel Joy ripped a 30 yard-shot from goal that fell inches over the line to make it 1-1.
Ashland got on the board in the 16th minute with two terrific individual efforts. Sophomore Makenzie Kelly gained possession of the ball in the defensive half of the field and started a counterattack.
She carried the ball through the midfield and weaved through the Trevecca defense before crossing a low ball into the area where senior Deijah Swihart hit a volley past Trojans keeper Delayna Holman. It was Swihart's third goal and Kelly's first assist of the season.
The Eagles continued their hold on possession through much of the contest, except for brief periods. Even when the Trojans were able to put passes together, the AU back line stymied their threats from materializing until Joy's goal.
Neither team was able to score in overtime, though the Eagles had a great opportunity just before the end of overtime, but Swihart was not able to get her foot on a bouncing ball in front of goal sent in by sophomore Brianna Fourman.
Junior keeper Hannah Lee made two saves, while Holman stopped eight shots, many of which came from outside the area.
Holman's best stop came in the 64th minute as junior Nadya Boualany turned from the corner of the area and fired a shot top shelf that Holman was able tip onto the cross bar.
The Eagles will have more than a week off before returning to the field next Friday (Sept. 27) at 1 p.m. at Northwood.
