In a road statement game against a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent which won't count in the league standings, Ashland University's women's soccer team defeated No. 11-ranked Ferris State, 3-1, on Sunday (Sept. 29).
The Eagles improve to 5-1-1, prior to the start of GLIAC play on Friday (Oct. 4) at 1 p.m. at Purdue Northwest. Ashland is at least 5-1-1 for the fourth time in the last five seasons (7-0-0 in 2015, 5-0-2 in 2016 and 2018). The Bulldogs, who had won six games in a row, move to 6-1-1.
Ashland didn't waste much time taking the lead, as senior forward Deijah Swihart potted her fourth goal of the season in the third minute. Swihart's goal was assisted by junior midfielder Nadya Boualany, her fourth helper of 2019.
Then, in the 21st minute, sophomore forward/midfielder Makenzie Kelly's third goal of the campaign gave Ashland a 2-0 lead. Junior midfielder/defender Hannah Riddle and junior midfielder Emily Mark each assisted on Kelly's goal – Riddle her second, and Mark her first, of the season.
The Eagles capped their scoring in the 51st minute when sophomore midfielder/defender Tori Baker added her first goal of her AU career, unassisted.
Ferris State's goal came from Mackenzie Dawes in the 81st minute.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Lee improved to 3-0-1 following eight saves against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs.
Ferris State out-shot Ashland, 22-12, including 14-4 in the second half. The Bulldogs also had the better of corner kicks on the day by a 10-4 count.
Ashland is undefeated in its last four trips to Big Rapids, Mich. (2-0-2).
