AU Netters Continue Rolling, Beat No. 23 Slippery Rock, 6-3

ASHLAND, Ohio – Heading south at this time of year does a lot of people good. They get in the warm weather, soak up sun rays and revel in their time away from the snow, cold and wind that is still rampant in the early part of March in mid-Ohio.

The AU women's tennis team traveled to Hilton Head, S.C. is doing all of the above, getting out of the snow and cold, but the Eagles are also playing quality tennis.

The Eagles claimed a 6-3 win over No. 23 Slippery Rock on Sunday (March 6) afternoon in the first match of their annual spring trip.

AU (13-5) earned wins in two of the three doubles matches on the day. Juniors Paige Cooper (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) and Torrie Goudy (Lexington, Ohio) picked up an 8-4 win at first doubles over Sarah Lynch and Janelle Krantz. At third doubles, freshman Kira Kotova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Erica Sullivan (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) beat Elizabeth Yetiskul and Sam Bruggeman, 8-1.

Goudy and Sullivan lost in the first two singles spots, but the Eagles cleaned up in the final four singles matches.

Cooper won a marathon match, 7-5, 6-7 (15-17), 11-9, over Yetiskul at third singles. Senior Corinne Pasley (Livonia, Mich./Adlaie Stevenson) beat Krantz, 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles. Kotova was a three-set, come-from-behind winner against Lauren Coggins at fifth singles (3-6, 6-3, 15-13). At sixth singles, Ware earned a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1, win over Melissa McCutcheon.

The Eagles continue their Hilton Head trip on Monday (March 7) at 8 a.m. against Brevard.
