Eagles Top Ferris State in GLIAC Tournament Opener, 5-1

ASHLAND, Ohio – The AU tennis team entered this weekend's GLIAC Tournament as the fourth seed. With that draw, the Eagles made quick work of Ferris State, 5-1, on Friday (Oct. 21) evening in Midland, Mich. in the tournament's quarterfinal stage.

The final three matches went unfinished after the Eagles closed out their fifth win of the match.

With the win, the Eagles advanced to the GLIAC semifinals and will face top seed Northwood on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 4 p.m.

Ashland (11-3) swept doubles play and took a 3-0 lead into singles play. Junior Erika Sullivan (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) swept Tabitha Simpson, 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles and freshman Zdenka Pozo (Cochahamba, Bolivia) beat Natalie Diorio, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at fourth singles to clinch the win.

The duo of seniors Paige Cooper (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) and Victoria Goudy (Lexington, Ohio) won at first singles, 8-4. Sullivan and Pozo won, 8-6, at second doubles, and sophomore Kira Kotova (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Sally Trout (Laura, Ohio/Milton-Union) were winners at third doubles, 8-6.
