Women's Tennis Finishes Hilton Head Trip Winning Five Of Six

The Ashland University women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to South Carolina with all smiles, winning five matches and only dropping one.

On Thursday (March 5), the Eagles won a rain-shortened match against the Brevard College Tornadoes, 4-2.

AU junior Martina Baca came away with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in first singles over BC's Katie Daugherty. Junior Daniela Alves also took down Anita Maryskova 6-2, 6-1, in fourth singles action.

In second doubles play, Junior Kendal Stephens and senior Sally Trout won their match 8-2 over the Tornadoes.

The Eagles also took on UNC Pembroke on Thursday, but fell 9-0. Alves forced a third set in fourth singles, but fell just short, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. The loss snapped her six consecutive match win streak in singles play.

On Friday (March 6), Ashland was back on the court for its final match in Hilton Head, S.C., taking on the Assumption Greyhounds.

The Eagles showed some strong play and fought to a 6-3 victory. Baca (6-4, 5-7, 10-4), sophomore Meghann Fitzpatrick (5-7, 6-0, 10-6), Alves (6-4, 6-1) and Trout (6-0, 6-2) all won singles matches, and Baca/Fitzpatrick won at doubles by an 8-2 count.

AU will play its final regular-season match next week (March 14), as the Indiana Tech Warriors come to town. The match will get underway at noon.
