Ashland University women's tennis snapped a six-match losing streak in grand fashion on Friday (Oct. 20) afternoon.
The Eagles (4-7 overall, 2-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) defeated Purdue Northwest (5-8, 0-8), 7-2. It was their conference first road win since Sept. 19, 2015.
It was also AU's most convincing GLIAC win since it beat Lake Erie, 9-0, on Oct. 5, 2013.
"The team has learned and improved a lot over the last few weeks," freshman Sofie Garpered said. "Today, the team was disciplined and competitive, and that led us to a win."
Ashland swept the doubles portion of the day. Sophomore Brianna Brdicka and freshman Camille Ringot won, 8-1, in the first position. Freshmen Anna Hart and Hazuki Ogino paired to win, 8-3, in the No. 2 slot. And Garpered teamed up with junior Natalie Keron to earn an 8-1 victory in third doubles.
All six singles matches lasted just two sets, and the Eagles won four of them. Brdicka, Ringot, Hart and sophomore Allison Brooks were victorious for AU. Brooks upped her team lead in singles wins to six.
If the Eagles win Saturday (Oct. 21) at Davenport, they could clinch a spot in the GLIAC tournament for the first time since 2013. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
