Ashland Women Earn GLIAC Championships Berth With Win

Ashland University's women's tennis team was in a "win, and you're in" scenario on Sunday (Oct. 21).

The Eagles were able to perform under pressure, and beat Davenport, 5-2, in Lexington, Ohio. With the win, Ashland will now advance to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, opening play against Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 26).

"Today was all about perseverance and resiliency," said Ashland head coach Lexi Bolesky. "The girls had a no-surrender attitude, and it paid off."

Doubles provided the quick start Ashland needed in the pivotal match.

In the second doubles slot, sophomore Camille Ringot and freshman Nikhol Pluta earned a decisive 6-2 win. The duo of freshman Gabriella Hudec and sophomore Hazuki Ogino secured a 6-4 win to give the Eagles the advantage heading into singles play.

In the first singles slot, Hudec won a tight match in two hard-fought sets, 6-4, 7-6. Ringot was able to ease her way to a straight-sets victory, 6-1, 6-3.

Pluta also got in on the winning ways for the Eagles, winning her match, 6-1, 6-4, in the fifth singles slot.

"We are proud and excited to compete in the GLIAC Championships next weekend, and are motivated to improve in practice this week," said Bolesky.
