Ashland University's women's tennis team played two matches on Saturday (Sept. 28), earning a split on the day.
"Today we learned what we can improve on and what we can excel at," said sophomore Nikhol Pluta. "Tomorrow is another opportunity to apply all the things we've been working hard on the last few weeks."
The Eagles (7-2 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) topped Lourdes in a one-sided victory, 7-0.
Ashland won both doubles matches that were played. Junior Anna Hart and freshman Zoe Rosu cruised through their No. 1 doubles match, 6-1. Junior Hazuki Ogino and senior Allison Brooks swept their opponent in No. 2 doubles, 6-0. No. 3 doubles were won by forfeit, and the Eagles earned the doubles point.
It was more of the same for Ashland in singles play, with all matches being won in straight sets. Senior Brianna Brdicka won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot, while Ogino won in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, sophomore Lydia Bice won, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Larissa Wieser did not drop a single game in her win, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Kristyn Conrad was also dominant in her win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0. The No. 6 match went to Ashland due to forfeit.
The Eagles also lost to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Michigan Tech on Saturday. The Huskies topped Ashland 7-0 in the match.
Ashland will play next at home in a GLIAC matchup with Lake Superior State on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 10 a.m. at the Deborah Liebert Karl Tennis Complex.
