Ashland University's women's tennis team eked out a hard-fought victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Lake Superior State on Sunday (Sept. 29).
The Eagles (8-2 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) bested the Lakers, 4-3, in a back-and-forth match.
With the win, Ashland matched their win total from the 2017-18 season and the 2018-19 season.
"The team's buy-in today was outstanding and we got the job done as a unit," said Ashland women's tennis head coach Lexi Bolesky. "We are extremely grateful for the opportunities we have to compete. We look forward to continuing to push forward and be better."
Ashland won all three doubles matches to earn the point in the doubles play. Two wins had to be gritted out by the Eagles.
At No. 1, junior Anna Hart and senior Brianna Brdicka won their match, 7-5. At No. 2, sophomore Gabriella Hudec and junior Camille Ringot were able to edge their opponent, 7-6, winning the tiebreak game. In the No. 3 match, senior Allison Brooks and junior Hazuki Ogino won a quick 6-0 match.
Singles play was hotly contested, as the Eagles only needed to earn three more points to win the match.
Brooks won her match without dropping a single game, 6-0, 6-0. Hart also cruised to a straight-sets win, 6-1, 6-2. The match ultimately came down to Ringot's at No. 4. She won the first set 6-2, then dropped the second 3-6. With the match hanging in the balance, Ringot was able to dominate the third set, 6-1.
The Eagles play next at Wayne State on Saturday (Oct. 5) in another GLIAC contest.
