Lock Haven University is located in central Pennsylvania and is right in the middle of prime hunting and fishing territory.
You can bet there are a lot of stories told there about the one that got away and how big it was.
The Ashland University volleyball team does not have to engage in such fiction. It went to Lock Haven and left nothing escape its grasp in a 4-0 weekend.
After two weekends of action the Eagles are 7-1. GLIAC play begins for the Eagles this coming weekend with matches at Findlay and Wayne State, but at this point, head coach Cass Dixon couldn't ask for much more.
Saturday, the Eagles raced past Queens (N.Y.), 3-0 and turned back Lock Haven, 3-1. The Eagles have won their last four outings. The only loss this season came to nationally ranked Minnesota-Duluth.
Against Queens, the Eagles recorded a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 romp. Junior Baley Bernthisel (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego) had a team-high eight kills and junior Marci Zegarac (Lansing, Ill./South) had 11 digs. Senior Brittany Snider (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) and freshman Shannon Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich.) had seven kills each.
Snider may be playing the best volleyball of her career at this point. In the late afternoon match against Lock Haven she had 25 kills, 20 digs, a .444 hitting percentage and three service aces. From start to finish, Snider terrorized the Bald Eagles. She led the way as AU prevailed, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16.
Lock Haven (3-5) entered this match as a highly regarded outfit, the Bald Eagles are expected to be one of the best teams in the Pennsylvania Conference this season. Snider didn't have to go it alone on this day. Bernthisel had eight kills and four block assists. Senior setter Crystal Elliott (Canal Winchester, Ohio) had 39 assists, 16 digs and six kills. Junior Megan Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) had 16 digs.
