There are push brooms, whisk brooms and volleyball brooms.
That last style isn't sold at Dollar General.
A volleyball broom refers to a 3-0 sweep. Friday, the Ashland University volleyball team accomplished that feat for the seventh time, winning at Michigan Tech.
The win gives AU an 8-3 record, 2-1 in GLIAC play. Michigan Tech is 5-7 and 2-1.
The Eagles won the match, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20.
Senior Kate Eckels put together a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Casey Clark had 10 kills. Senior Marci Zegarac and redshirt freshman Shelly DeHenning had nine digs apiece. DeHenning had 37 assists.
Sylvie Rokosh paced the Huskies with 10 kills. Jacqueline Arid finished the match with 12 digs.
In the first set, the score was tied, 13-13 when the Eagles reeled off six consecutive points to take control of the proceedings. AU had a .280 hitting percentage while Tech was sluggish out of the gate, hitting .069.
The second set started as a back-and-forth affair, but the Eagles slowly pulled away and midway through the set, led, 13-6. The third set was more of the same, the Eagles going in front, 17-9 and wearing down the home team from that point forward.
Up next for AU is a visit to Northern Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 28, 4 p.m.).
