Volleyball Aces Road-Challenge Against Lake Superior State

The Ashland Eagles grabbed their third win of the season tonight against the Lake Superior State Lakers. AU won in three sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.

Ashland improves its record to 3-7 overall, and is now 3-3 in the GLIAC. LSSU is 1-10, and 0-6 in GLIAC play.

Alli Cudworth took charge offensively for Ashland. The sophomore tallied 16 kills on 28 attempts in the three set match. Samantha Zuber recorded 13 kills with just two errors.  Katie Siefert had a match-high 43 assists.

In the first set Ashland gained control early on. Maureen Johnson added a block to make the score 6-2, and the Eagles continued to roll. Late in the first Lake State chipped away at Ashland's lead and got within two points, the score 19-17. AU ended the first set with a solid 6-0 run, and downed the Lakers 25-17.

LSSU won the first point of the second set, and kept that one-point edge over Ashland until the 6-5 mark. Zuber added a kill to tie the set at 6-6. She then scored the next three points for the Eagles, taking a 9-6 lead. Cudworth added a nice 3-0 run late in the set to go up 19-15 over the Lakers. Casey Clark closed the second set out with a kill from Siefert.

Ashland took the initial lead in the third set. Lake State tied it at 8-8 but gave the AU the point and the momentum after a service error. The Eagles kept the lead the rest of the set, they won 25-22. 

As a team AU had 49 kills with 16 errors on 107 total attempts.  The Eagles notched 32 digs, two block solos and six block assists. The Eagles hit .308 from the floor, their second best hitting percentage this season. Ashland held LSSU to a .106 hitting percentage on the night.

AU travels to Northwood for a 5:00 pm start tomorrow (Saturday Sept. 27).
