Volleyball Set To Play At Midwest Region Crossover

Ashland University's volleyball team will have the opportunity to check out the regional competition in its last non-conference action of the regular season this weekend at the Mizuno Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover in Aurora, Ill.

The Eagles (12-5) are the No. 4 seed out of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They will play on Friday (Oct. 16) against Indianapolis (8-11) at 12:30 p.m. and Truman State (11-6) at 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday (Oct. 17) against McKendree (12-6) at 2 p.m.

"The Crossover is a great opportunity for us to, basically, play out where we fall within the region," said Ashland head coach Cass Dixon. "We're going to play some really great competition."

Ashland has played the Greyhounds twice already this season, winning both matchups, 3-1 and 3-0.

"It's always hard to beat a team three times, but they're playing with a little different lineup, so, hopefully, that will work to our advantage," Dixon said. "And Truman and McKendree, they're solid programs. I think we have a good opportunity going into the Crossover to come out with some wins, and that, in turn, will help us with our regional rankings."

The Crossover is a 36-team tournament featuring teams from the GLIAC, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Ashland enters the Crossover having won six of its last seven matches, and is coming off its first victory against Grand Valley State in nine seasons.

"I think we've put ourselves in a good position," said Dixon, "and now we just have to step out on the court and play it on the court. Playing well against Ferris (State) and getting the win against Grand Valley, we've talked about every time we get one more win, it just boosts that confidence that much more."

Junior outside hitter Alli Cudworth comes into the weekend leading the GLIAC in kills per set (4.22), points per set (5.0) and service aces (35). As a team, the Eagles are second in the conference in service aces (106) and fourth in blocks per set (2.11).
