The Ashland University volleyball team lost a three-set match on Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon, falling to Wayne State, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.
The Eagles (6-4, 0-2 GLIAC) will now return to Kates Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 19) when they try and defend their 18-match home winning streak against Tiffin at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Wayne State (6-4, 2-0 GLIAC) was able to take command of the first set by running out to a 13-7 lead and never relinquishing it.
In Set 2, the Eagles had a 21-20 lead after junior Reanne Neal's kill off a pass by freshman Kali Apelt. The Warriors ran off the next three points to take a 23-21 lead. Freshman Ellie Jensen followed with a kill, but Wayne State scored the next two to take a 2-0 set lead.
Ashland was not able to keep up with Wayne State in the third, hitting just .029 for the set.
Jensen led the Eagles with eight kills. Sophomore Shelby Woycik tacked on seven kills and sophomore Paige Leitz had six kills while hitting .375. Overall, the Eagles hit .088.
Apelt led the Eagles with 24 assists and junior Kaitlin Bean and freshman McKinley Smith had nine digs each to lead the squad.
Hailey Richardson paced the Warriors with 18 kills (.385). Wayne State hit .257 for the match.
