Eagles Complete Weekend Sweep, Win 21st Straight at Kates

The Ashland University volleyball team made it a complete weekend sweep by wiping out visiting Purdue Northwest, 25-17, 25-13, 25-11, at Kates Gymnasium on Saturday (Sept. 30) afternoon.

The Eagles (10-5, 4-3 GLIAC) did not drop a set this weekend as they upped their home winning streak to 21 matches. The streak started on Oct. 10, 2015.

Ashland was never threatened on Saturday, hitting .337 for the afternoon while holding the Pride (5-12, 1-6 GLIAC) to a minus-.011 mark.

Purdue Northwest – playing in the GLIAC for the first time this season – hit .200 in the opening frame, but Ashland's defense smothered the Pride the rest of the way. PNW managed just 10 kills over the final two sets, including just one in the third set as AU held the visitor to a minus-.292 mark.

The Eagles clicked offensively with freshman setter Kali Apelt dishing out 32 assists and leading the team with nine digs and three aces, just missing out on her second straight double-doubles.

Sophomore Shelby Woycik led the hitters with 15 kills (.353) against just three errors on 33 swings. Junior Reanne Neal totaled seven kills and did not commit an error while sophomore Sophi Cudworth chipped in seven kills (.353) with only one error.

Ashland committed just eight attacking errors in the match and led in blocks, 8-3.

The Eagles will return to the floor next Friday (Oct. 6) when they travel to Michigan Tech for a 5 p.m. first serve. AU's next shot to extend its home winning streak will come Oct. 20 against nationally-ranked Ferris State.
