Aguayo Reaches Milestone, Eagles Lose Pair At Crossover

Ashland University's volleyball team finished play at the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 14), losing 3-1 decisions to both Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis.

In the 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24 loss to USI, the Eagles (11-9) had three players with double-digit kills – sophomore outside hitter Shelby Woycik (12), freshman outside hitter Zoie Franklin (11) and junior middle blocker Reanne Neal (10). Three Ashland players – senior libero Melanie Aguayo (16), Franklin (12) and Woycik (11) – had double-digit digs, while freshman setter Kali Apelt posted 44 assists.

Sophomore middle blocker Michaela Ping hit .600 in the loss, while Neal had seven of the Eagles' 16 block assists.

The 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-12 defeat to UMSL saw Aguayo collect a team-high 17 digs, and, in the process, reach the 1,000-career-dig mark (1,014). Woycik (11), Neal (10) and junior defensive specialist Kaitlin Bean (10) also had at least 10 digs.

Offensively, Woycik had 12 kills and Neal 10, and Apelt led the way with 36 assists. Neal added six block assists and two solo blocks, as Ashland had 20 and four, respectively, as a team.

UP NEXT: Back home to start a stretch of four straight matches at Kates Gymnasium on Friday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. vs. Ferris State.
