Woycik Hits 1,000 Kills As Eagles Sweep Lakers

The Ashland University volleyball team worked an efficient attack and never let host Grand Valley State into the match as the Eagles cruised to a sweep, 25-12, 25-20, 25-22, on Friday (Oct. 19) night in Allendale, Mich.

Junior Shelby Woycik recorded her 1,000th career kill in the match and finished with a match-high 15 kills (.316) and added 10 digs for a double-double.

The Eagles (19-5, 10-2 GLIAC) remain three matches ahead of Wayne State in the GLIAC South standings with four to play.

As a team, the Eagles hit .314 and held the Lakers (12-10, 5-7 GLIAC) to a .121 mark.

Ashland took command of the match early on, racing out to a 17-5 lead in the first set. The Eagles hit .378 and limited GVSU to a .051 mark.

Redshirt-junior Michaela Ping had a standout match for Ashland, hitting .579 with 11 kills against no errors on 19 swings. She also had three blocks. Junior Reanne Neal also did not commit a hitting error with seven kills on 17 attacks with three blocks (one solo).

Junior Sophi Cudworth added eight kills (.235) and freshman Erin Krupar chipped in six kills and 11 digs.

Senior Kaitlin Bean racked up 19 digs (6.33 per set), while freshman setter Zoey Peck finished with 41 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.

Staci Brower paced the Lakers with 13 kills (.444) and Kendall Yerkes had 18 digs.

The Eagles will return to the floor on Saturday (Oct. 20) when they take on Davenport in Grand Rapids, Mich. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
