Ashland University's volleyball team opened the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 7) night with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 27-29, 28-26, 15-12) loss to Davenport at Kates Gymnasium.

The Eagles are 25-6 after having their nine-match winning streak snapped. The Panthers improve to 16-13. Earlier this season, the Eagles defeated the Panthers twice, 3-1 at home on Sept. 7 and 3-0 on the road on Oct. 20.

"Can't take it away from Davenport. They played really well," said Ashland head coach Kevin Foeman. "They came out swinging, and we played so well for so long. At some point, you don't have everything clicking. And today, we didn't have everything clicking, and Davenport took advantage of it.

"We had our opportunities. We had our opportunities in the fourth set (led 24-21), but we never really took advantage of it and closed the door. I thought they played really hard. We just weren't able to finish it quickly enough."

Ashland, which has been ranked No. 7 in all three NCAA Division II Midwest Regional rankings this fall, will await the call for an at-large berth to the postseason tournament on Sunday (Nov. 11) at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Five Eagles ended Wednesday night with double-digit kills, paced by junior outside hitter Shelby Woycik's 20. Freshman setter Zoey Peck collected 59 assists, one shy of her season high.

Defensively, senior libero Kaitlin Bean finished with a team-high 24 digs, and Peck added 20, while senior middle hitter Reanne Neal added four block assists and a solo block.

For the Panthers, Ashley VanderHorst led the way with 18 kills, and Kasey Stehouwer had a team-high 23 digs.
