Eagles Cap Homestand With Sixth Straight Win

The Ashland University volleyball team won its sixth straight match and earned its fourth straight sweep with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 win over visiting Wayne State on Tuesday (Sept. 24) night at Kates Gymnasium.

The Eagles (11-2, 3-0 GLIAC) held the Warriors (6-5, 1-2 GLIAC) to just .116 hitting to roll to the win.

Senior Sophi Cudworth was efficient offensively for Ashland, tying for the team high with 10 kills (.500) and committing just one hitting error.

Also, redshirt-junior Lexi Lombardo hit .455 with five kills on 11 attacks and no errors. It was her fifth straight errorless match.

The Eagles trailed early in the first set, 11-6, but rallied to score nine of the next 10 points to take a 15-12 lead. The Warriors came back to tie it at 15, but the Eagles scored the last four points of the set with sophomore Zoey Peck on the serve.

Ashland's defense was dominant in the second set, holding Wayne State to minus-.059 hitting. In the third, the Eagles had 17 kills to just 10 for the Warriors. Cudworth ended the match with a kill off a set by junior libero McKinley Smith.

Redshirt-junior Brooke Peiffer matched Cudworth with 10 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Peck managed 29 assists and seven digs, while sophomore Erin Krupar chipped in nine kills and seven digs. 

Madelyn Krenz led the Warriors with nine kills.

The Eagles will hit the road this weekend, starting Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. at Davenport.
