Ashland Men Take Second, Women Third At Northwood

The Northwood Invitational provided a solid start to the 2019 season for Ashland University men's and women's cross country teams on Saturday (Sept. 7) afternoon.

In the six-team 6K field on Saturday, the Eagle men finished in second place. Ashland had 53 team points, trailing only Saginaw Valley State's 26. The host Timberwolves placed third with 59 team points.

Senior Steven Kapes paced the Eagle men's field by finishing fifth individually in 19:04.4. Senior Kyle Shively (eighth, 19:15.6) and junior Nick Reimund (10th, 19:17.8) also placed in the top 10.

Rounding out the Ashland men's efforts were junior Ian Johnson (13th, 19:26.6), sophomore Jake Hall (17th,19:35.7), junior Connor Ingram (19th, 19:41.8), junior Duvan Bautista-Catalan (22nd, 19:54.7), sophomore Cody Booth (29th, 20:45.1), junior Tyler Sievert (31st, 20:55.8) and junior Nathaniel Redden (34th, 21:09.7).

In the women's 5K race, Ashland finished third in the six-team field with 82 points. Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State each finished with 32 team points, and the Wildcats won on a tiebreaker.

The top two Eagle finishers recorded collegiate 5K PRs – sophomore Abby Moser (10th, 19:17.0) and senior Johannah Stefanek (11th, 19:21.8). Senior Haylee Zigan was 25th in 20:21.3, while freshman Emma Hinkle was 26th in 20:23.6 in her first collegiate race.

Competing for the AU women on Saturday as well were junior Tracy Morgan (28th, 20:31.1), freshman Hannah Ohman (32nd, 20:31.1),  sophomore Cassandra Ponzi (48th, 22:46.6), junior Makayla Wagner (49th, 23:00.5), and sophomore Destini Oler (64th, 41:11.8).

Ashland's men and women will next compete at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday (Sept. 13).
