If Ashland University's men's cross country team isn't ready for the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, it is really close.

At Wilmington's JennaStrong Fall Classic on Friday (Oct. 11), the Eagle men finished in third place, as four of their top seven runners turned in 8K PR times. At the top of the 36-team field, Ohio State was first with 31 points, Shawnee State was second with 48, and Ashland was third with 136.

Senior Steven Kapes placed eighth individually – and first among non-Ohio State, Shawnee State or Wright State runners – by crossing the finish line in 25:35.0. Ashland's next four runners all PRed on Friday – junior Ian Johnson (34th, 26:24.4), sophomore Cody Booth (35th, 26:28.3), freshman Lucas Lay (37th, 26:31.2) and junior Connor Ingram (38th, 26:33.9).

Rounding out the AU men's top seven runners were juniors Tyler Sievert (45th, 26:43.0) and Nick Reimund (54th, 26:59.1).

On the women's side in the 5K race, the Eagles placed 11th of 33 teams with 295 points. Ohio State was first (41), followed by Wright State (46) and Kenyon (115).

Senior Johannah Stefanek paced the Ashland effort, taking 26th individually with a new 5K PR of 19:20.8. Sophomore Abby Moser was not far behind, finishing 29th in 19:29.2.

Freshmen Emma Hinkle (79th, 20:37.8) and Hannah Ohman (86th, 20:43.8) were the next two Eagles to cross the finish line, followed by senior Haylee Zigan (92nd, 20:54.1) and juniors Tracy Morgan (107th, 21:08.5) and Maureen McKeown (120th, 21:26.7).
