Kapes Earns Second-Team All-GLIAC At Championships

Senior Steven Kapes earned second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, finishing 17th on Saturday (Oct. 26) at the 2019 GLIAC Championships at Purdue Northwest.

Kapes crossed the finish line of the 8K race in a PR time of 24:57.6.

As a team, the Eagle men placed seventh with 197 team points. Grand Valley State won the team title (44), followed by Michigan Tech (57) and Saginaw Valley State (61).

Sophomore Cody Booth was Ashland's No. 2 men's runner on the day, placing 49th with a PR of 25:57.9. Senior Kyle Shively took 51st in 26:00.7, freshman Lucas Lay was 57th in a PR time of 26:06.7, and senior Tyler Sievert was 59th in 26:10.9.

Rounding out the AU men's top seven were juniors Ian Johnson (64th, PR of 26:14.5) and Connor Ingram (75th, 26:36.7).

On the women's side, Ashland placed eighth on Saturday with 245 team points. The Lakers won with 17 points, followed by the Cardinals (89) and the Huskies (92).

Sophomore Abby Moser was the top Eagle women's placer, turning in a 6K PR time of 22:51.7 for 30th place, while senior Johannah Stefanek took 35th in another PR of 23:05.3.

Freshman Emma Hinkle was 79th in a PR of 24:42.6, while another rookie, Hannah Ohman, was 88th in a PR time of 25:15.6. Rounding out AU's top seven were junior Tracy Morgan (93rd, 25:41.0), junior Maureen McKeown (96th, 25:52.8), and sophomore Cassandra Ponzi (97th, PR of 25:57.6).

Ashland's men and women will now turn their attention to the 2019 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships, Nov. 9 at Southern Indiana.
