Opening its 12-game Spring Break trip to Florida on Sunday (March 3), Ashland University's softball team split its two games, taking a 7-1 decision from Felician and losing 5-1 to Georgian Court.
The Eagles' win over Felician featured strong play in all phases. Ashland's offense boasted 11 hits, led by junior shortstop Bree Gill going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and two hits each from junior designated player Dayna Denner and junior catcher Cassie Haight.
Ashland's defense did not commit an error behind senior pitcher Hannah Stroe, who moved to 2-1 on the young season thanks to a complete-game six-hitter. Stroe allowed a run and a walk and struck out three in the victory.
The loss vs. Georgian Court saw the Eagles string together nine hits, but leave 11 runners on base. Denner was 3-for-4, and senior first baseman Kylie Asmus and Haight each rapped two hits. The pitching loss went to sophomore Laney Jones (1-1), who allowed three hits, four walks and three runs (one earned) and struck out six in two innings.
Stroe came in and finished the game with three scoreless innings of relief.
Ashland's second day of Florida play will be Monday (March 4) at 11:15 a.m. vs. Mercyhurst and 1:45 p.m. vs. LIU Post.
