In a doubleheader which originally was supposed to be played at home, Ashland University's softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-2 victory in Game 1 on Saturday (March 16) at Ohio Dominican, before losing 6-5 in the nightcap despite a late rally.
The Eagles (14-6) took Saturday's opener on the strength of a stellar pitching performance from senior Hannah Stroe (7-3), who fanned 14 Panthers en route to a complete-game five-hitter. Stroe, who has won five consecutive decisions, walked two and allowed two runs.
In Game 2, the Eagles trailed 6-1 after 3½ innings, but nearly pulled out the comeback thanks to a single run in the bottom of the fifth, then three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-clearing double from junior shortstop Bree Gill.
After 20 road/neutral-site games to begin the season, Ashland is scheduled to play at Brookside Park for the first time in 2019 on Wednesday (March 20) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader vs. Northwood in the Eagles' Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
