For the fourth season in a row, and the sixth time this decade, the No. 2-ranked Ashland University's women's basketball team has started a season at 2-0 following a 94-74 win at Ohio Dominican (1-1) on Saturday (Nov. 10) afternoon.
The Eagles won for the second day in a row at ODU, following a season-opening 84-74 victory on Friday (Nov. 9) night vs. Cedarville. Ashland has won 114 of its last 119 games (.958), and 64 games in a row in the regular season.
THE TOP TEN
1. For the second straight day, it was junior guard/forward Jodi Johnson who paced the AU offense. Johnson was 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, finishing with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists. To start 2018-19, Johnson has posted 50 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in two games, and with 1,184 career points, is just 16 away from tying Gail Wasmus (1,200) for 15th place on Ashland's all-time scoring list.
2. Senior guard Maddie Dackin was next in Saturday's scoring column with 17 points, and in the last five quarters of play, she has scored 26 points. Yet another senior guard, Brooke Smith, added 12 points, four assists and two steals.
3. It would be safe to say starting agrees with junior forward Sara Loomis. A day after going for 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in her first collegiate start on Friday, Loomis posted 10 points, 11 boards and three blocks against the Panthers.
4. On Saturday, the Eagles shot 52.8 percent from the field and were a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. In two games this season, Ashland's percentage from the charity stripe is 90.0.
5. The Eagles out-rebounded the Panthers, 37-31, and their rebounding margin in the two early-season wins, with a smaller starting lineup than in previous years, is plus-8.5.
6. Ashland picked up 21 assists on 38 made field goals, led by junior guard Renee Stimpert's seven helpers. With 395 career assists, Stimpert is closing in on Andi Daugherty (398) for fourth place in program history.
7. The Eagles forced 15 ODU turnovers, converting them into 21 points.
8. Ashland's victory on Saturday was its 17th consecutively vs. Ohio Dominican.
9. For ODU, Alexa Fisher led the way with 19 points, followed by Angela Troyer and Hannah Clark with 13 points each, and Olivia Fox with 10 points.
10. Ashland hasn't lost a game in November since Nov. 22, 2014 (72-64 at Southern Indiana).
UP NEXT
Wednesday (Nov. 14) at 5:30 p.m. at Walsh, in a third consecutive road game for Ashland before opening the home portion of the 2018-19 schedule with its Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 24-25.
